Overview

Shrewsbury has always been one of the great schools of England, ever since its royal foundation in 1552 by King Edward VI, and it was recognised as one of the leading independent schools by the Clarendon Commission in the last century. Many of its old boys - Sir Philip Sidney and Charles Darwin, for example, and in current times Sir Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society and Astronomer Royal - have achieved great fame. Shrewsbury continues to attract pupils of great potential and capable of great achievements. There are eleven boarding houses and two for dayboys, each with its own housemaster or housemistress, tutor team and matron. Each house also has its own colours. In football each house competes in four different leagues (two senior, two junior) and three knock-out competitions (two senior, one junior).

Unique Points

The school's cross-country running club (the "Hunt") is the world's oldest and the first modern track and field meeting was held at the school. Old boys played a role in formulating the rules of association football and football is still played by most boys; the Royal Shrewsbury School Boat Club is the most successful school rowing club in the history of the Henley Royal Regatta.

Entry Requirements

In the first instance parents are encouraged to call the Admissions Office to arrange a visit, which will usually include a tour of the school, a meeting with the Director of Admissions and Headmaster, and a visit to one or two boarding houses. Following your visit, and if you have not already done so, you will  be invited to register your child by filling in a registration form, and to nominate your preferred choice of House or Houses, though this can be done at a later stage. About 22 months from their date of entry, you will be asked to guarantee the place you have registered for your child in the House of your choice by completing the final entry form and paying a deposit; this is 10% of a term’s fee for families in the UK and 100% of a term's fees for families living overseas. Candidates for our Third Form take either the Common Entrance Exam or our own Academic Scholarship Exam in the summer of the year of entry.
