Saints Abroad Scholarship
Scholarship Name Saints Abroad Scholarship
Academic Year 2025
Scholarship amount Up to £12,000
Scholarship Deadline 13 March 2025

The Global Office is delighted to offer a range of scholarships to support students who will be studying or working abroad as part of their degree programme through our Saints Abroad scholarship portfolio. These scholarships range from £500 to £12,000. They are generously supported by our donors including the Miss Marjorie Moncrieff Travel Scholarship (Study Abroad and Summer Abroad), the Lesley B. Hinde Stevens Travel Bursary, the Nisbet Memorial Travel Scholarship, the Prof Norman K. Smith Endowment, the George Vincent Simson Travelling Scholarship, the St Salvator's Hall Travel Scholarships, the Walker Trust Travel Bursaries, the Zannah Stephen Memorial Travel Bursaries, the Agnes Glyn Travel Bursaries, the Alex Richardson Award, and the Adam Smith Thomson Travel Awards.

The Saints Abroad Scholarship programme is also open to students undertaking summer opportunities related to their degree programme or volunteering opportunities supported by the University. These placements should take place in summer 2025. Students due to graduate in June 2025 are not eligible.

The Global Office is committed to supporting sustainable international travel where possible. We appreciate that this type of travel can incur additional costs. As such, students may also apply to this fund to offset some of the costs related to more sustainable forms of travel for their semester or year abroad, for example, travelling by train rather than plane.

Value of award (per year)

£500 to £12,000 towards living costs for semester and year-long programmes. Amounts may be lower for summer placements.

Additional criteria

  • Open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students (any fee status)

  • You must be participating in a St Andrews Study Abroad programme or an overseas external placement programme in the next academic year, or travel in summer 2025.

  • As part of the application process, you should provide a short personal statement of around 500 words outlining how the scholarship will support your study, work or summer placement. You should also provide a breakdown of your budget for your placement which should indicate how much financial support you may require from a scholarship. The budget should include projected expenditure for your time abroad and should include a breakdown of other income sources e.g. family contribution, student loans, other scholarships.

  • Please give an estimated budget for your placement.

  • Outline the financial circumstances in which you will undertake your placement.

  • Describe how a scholarship would help you to undertake the placement.

Many of our partner universities provide estimates of inbound student expenses on their webpages, which may be useful to you in preparing your budget. If your host organisation is yet to confirm the exact location of your placement, please estimate costs based on your preferred location in the country.
